Personal training and nutrition.

Every session is one-to-one with me at the Health & Fitness Club, Bedford Lodge Hotel, Newmarket, and I look after your food as well as your training.

Sessions

Each one lasts between 45 minutes and an hour, and every client gets an hour slot. Before the first, I send you a form to fill in so I have everything ready. Then on session one you get straight to it: learning how to lift weights and starting your plan.

Food

My first choice is MyFitnessPal. I set you targets for calories and macros (protein, carbs and fat) and teach you about nutrition as you go, so you learn to track your food and hit your targets. For a quicker fix, say a wedding coming up, I’ll put you on a nutrition plan that tells you what to eat.

Tracking progress

That depends on your goal. Losing weight shows in your clothes and belt sizes, and sometimes on the scales. More often the goal is being stronger and healthier for later in life, and we track that through your weight sessions. Clients tend to surprise themselves with what they can actually lift, compared with what they thought they could ever do.

Where clients started

Most of my clients are over 40, and plenty had never used a gym before they started.

Menopause, and months of post-viral fatigue

“I was a complete beginner, I’d never set foot in a proper gym before… I can actually do proper press-ups now as well as lift seriously heavy weights! No one is more surprised about this than me!”

Stuck doing 90% cardio

“I contacted Luke after I got stuck in a rut with my training. 90% of my training was cardio… Now 90% of my training is weight training, I feel leaner and stronger and in just 4 months my muscle definition has greatly improved.”

Kate Young · client testimonial

Terrified of the gym

“I was completely unhappy with how I looked, my weight and my level of fitness. Although I was terrified to go to the gym, once I got started I loved it!… I am so much stronger and fitter than I have ever been and I feel perfectly confident walking into the gym now.”

Strength was the goal

“My goals are to be stronger, so week by week the weights become more challenging and sometimes I can’t believe how much more I am managing to lift!”

Questions

I’ve never set foot in a gym. Is that a problem?

Not at all. Plenty of my clients started exactly there. The first sessions are about learning the kit and getting your form right, at your pace, so you’re confident using the gym on your own.

When can I train?

Monday to Friday. Sessions start at 7.30am on Tuesdays and Fridays and 8am on other days, and run until 9pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5pm on Wednesdays and 4pm on Fridays. Message me for the times that are free.

How much does it cost?

Send me a message and I’ll come back with my current prices.

Where do sessions happen?

At the Health & Fitness Club at Bedford Lodge Hotel, 11 Bury Road, Newmarket CB8 7BX. It’s handy for Newmarket, Cambridge and Ely, and there’s parking on site.

Do I have to follow a strict diet?

No. My first choice is MyFitnessPal, with calorie and macro targets I set for you. As one client put it, my approach “makes it simple to enjoy life, whilst correctly fuelling your body.”

Can you work around an injury or a bad back?

Yes. Clients have come to me with bad backs, shoulders and knees. Sessions are adapted so you keep training while you build strength and stability back up.

What if I need to cancel a session?

Give 24 hours’ notice. Sessions cancelled with less notice are charged in full, unless it’s a medical emergency.

See if I can fit you in.

Message me with what you’d like to achieve. If it all lines up, I’ll send you my form and get your first session ready.
